The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged Nigerians to avoid engaging in multiple voter registrations, warning that the act constitutes an offence under the law.
Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa on Monday, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Bayelsa State, Mallam Isah Ehimeakhe, said that double registration is punishable under Section 114(b) of the Electoral Act 2022, which prescribes a fine, imprisonment, or both.
“Once you have been issued a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) or have completed the registration process before, you are not required to register again,” Ehimeakhe said.
He noted that INEC’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) is equipped to detect and flag multiple registrations.
Ehimeakhe emphasized that while voter registration is a constitutional right, it also comes with the responsibility to adhere to electoral laws.
He encouraged citizens who have just turned 18 or have not yet registered to take advantage of the opportunity, assuring that no eligible Nigerian will be denied the right to register or vote.
The commissioner also noted that security agencies and other stakeholders are working with INEC to ensure a safe and transparent registration process.
