The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the arrest of 10 nationals from the Republic of Benin in connection with a suspected human trafficking operation in the state.

Speaking to journalists in Akure, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Lawal Adebowale, disclosed that the arrests were made on July 31, 2025, around 8:30 PM at various residences along Oda Road.

The suspects were identified as Atouh Joel, Mohamed Amidou, Saibou Akateliwe, Abdul Jahao, Ndah Severin, Kumpori Ruth, Kumpori Martin, Tatiana Dianne, Martias Sossa, and Ndapola Oba Giov.

According to CP Adebowale, the individuals had illegally entered Nigeria from the Republic of Benin. Some were found in possession of expired international passports, while others lacked valid travel documents altogether.

Investigations revealed that the suspects conspired to smuggle a 29-year-old Congolese man, Nzaou Yelica Christ-Olse, into Nigeria without his consent. The victim had reportedly been deceived with a promise to help him start an online business but was abandoned by the group upon arrival.

“The offence committed by the suspects is a clear violation of Nigeria’s immigration and anti-human trafficking laws,” Adebowale stated.

He further explained that the case had been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.

The Congolese victim is said to be safe, in protective custody, and receiving appropriate care.

Commissioner Adebowale called on residents of the state to continue providing credible information that could help the police in tackling crime.

“We reaffirm our commitment to lawful, ethical, and responsive policing. With the support and vigilance of the good people of Ondo St
